What this tool does
This piloted STI tap is used to cut oversized internal threads specifically designed for installing M48 x 5 thread inserts (such as Helicoil®). The built-in 1-15/16" pilot keeps the tap perfectly centered, ensuring straight, accurate threads in large or critical holes before the insert is installed.
Before You Buy
- STI Tap - not a standard tap: This tap does not cut standard M48 × 5 threads. It creates the larger STI thread profile required only for installing thread inserts.
- Designed for Thread Inserts: Use this tap only if you are installing an M48 × 5 insert. The finished hole will accept a standard M48 × 5 fastener after the insert is installed.
- Integrated 1-15/16" pilot: The pilot rides in an existing bore or counterbore to keep the tap aligned, reducing the risk of crooked threads, chatter, or cross-threading in large holes.
- Industrial-grade Application: Intended for heavy-duty repairs and production work in cast iron, steel, or aluminum—commonly used in machinery, equipment housings, and high-stress threaded components.
