• Requires Stainless Steel Activator: This blackener is part of a two-step finishing process and will not perform correctly on untreated stainless steel. The surface must first be pre-treated with JAX Stainless Steel Activator to properly prepare and activate the metal. Skipping this step can result in weak, uneven, or incomplete blackening.
• Rinse between steps: After using the Stainless Steel Activator, the surface should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water before applying the Blackener. This removes residual activator and ensures a controlled, even blackening reaction.
• Gallon size – professional coverage: Supplied in a full 1-gallon container, this solution is intended for shop and industrial use. Coverage will vary depending on part size, surface condition, and application method (brush, wipe, or dip).
• Surface preparation matters: Parts must be clean and free of oils, coolants, fingerprints, oxidation, and residues prior to activation. Any contamination can interfere with the chemical reaction and affect finish quality.
• Typical reaction time: After rinsing and applying the blackener, allow the chemical reaction to develop. Most stainless steel surfaces will darken within a few minutes before rinsing or wiping to stop the reaction. Actual time may vary based on alloy and desired finish depth.
